The Habs played a nice first exhibition game tonight. I liked what they brought. A few notes from my end: - Lane Hutson was probably the best player on the ice. So comfortable, so creative, so shifty. The fact he got to play with Savard suggests the Habs are going to give him a good look at making the team, and I would not be surprised in the least if our top 4 to start the year is Matheson-Guhle (if Guhle is ready) and Hutson-Savard. Hutson's done nothing to deserve starting in the AHL. - Oliver Kapanen is the other guy who is playing himself into the conversation for a roster spot. He was probably our best forward tonight. Smart player. Played both ends of the ice well. Got a few quality looks by being in the right spot. And he frankly looks a lot more solid physically than he was when we drafted him. I get that there isn't really a spot for him, and there certainly aren't spots for both him and Beck, but man does he look like he could step right into an NHL line-up. He's playing a pro-style game. - Emil Heineman had another good exhibiton game. Can he bring this to games that matter? That'll be the question. But he showed off his great shot again, and he did well at the fore-check. He did what he needs to do to eventually make this roster. When does that happen? Likely when an injury opens up a spot for him, but tonight was a positive step for him. - Joshua Roy wasn't as illustrious as some of the other guys, but he played a sensible game and then struck for a big moment when the time was right. He looked poised, and I don't think he lost any footing on a roster spot from tonight's game. - Patrik Laine played a good game too. I expected him to be a bit more dynamic as a skater, so I don't know if there was some rust there, but he slowed the game down when he had the puck, and he got himself into shooting position. - Kirby Dach also looked like he was playing his way back into game shape, but he had some good moments. He wasn't as dominant on the puck as we saw in the past, but he also looks like he'll be fine coming back from his injury. - Alex Newhook was maybe the least impressive member of his line. Needed to play with more speed, and while this was just one game, it makes you wonder if Laine and Dach aren't the right linemates for him. Those other two guys looked more content to slow things down and cycle, whereas Newhook's strength lies in creating off the rush. I still wonder if he's better off playing 3C and seeing a Roy, Armia, or Heineman up on the 2nd line, for example. - Alex Barre-Boulet ultimately helped his cause tonight. I thought he was weak in the first period, but he got better as the game went on. A little under-sized and unimposing, but I think he's fighting with the likes of Pezzetta to be the 13th forward. With Simoneau starting on the C team, the door is open for ABB to push Pezzetta for that job. It's not going to be a Beck, Kapanen, or Heineman who sits 60% of the games in the pressbox. It'll be a vet. So ABB helped himself a bit tonight at putting pressure on Pezzetta for his job. - Logan Mailloux remained the biggest disappointment of camp for me thus far. Not a ton of offence created, but more importantly, he continues to make errors in his own zone. He had a couple of bad turnovers, and he's not making great reads. I think he's made the D partners he's played with look worse than when they're playing with other players. So to me, this is a player who isn't ready and needs to go back to the AHL. - On that subject, Justin Barron didn't really stand out tonight, but that might be all he needs to do. There's a spot open on the right side of the Habs D, if we assume Guhle and Savard take the top two spots there. Someone's going to play with Xhekaj, and that could be Barron, Struble, or Mailloux. Right now, Barron has to go through waivers. Right now, Barron got first crack at playing with Xhekaj in this game. So it's looking like his job to lose. Last year, Barron's big problems were defensive, as is the case for Mailloux thus far. There isn't room for both guys. But unlike Mailloux, Barron played a pretty clean game in his own end. If he can continue that, that's his ticket. Pretty much agree with your thoughts and of course I always supplement; 1) I didn't categorize Mailloux as a strong disappointment - thought he would have showed more but Logan was saddled with a terrible defensive partner in Engstrom. Engstrom looked entirely like the deer in the headlights. Granted new adjustment to North American rinks and the quality of the competition, but Adam was beaten up physically on the boards. Engstrom did not process the game fast enough much like Barron did last year. I thought Mailloux had to compensate several times for Engstrom's weakness, rather than the other way around. I would like to see Mailloux with a stronger LHD partner to see if anything in his game changes so I hope we see that. 2) Dach looked solid, and confident. I was pleasantly surprised on Kapanen - he won a few key face-offs, and skated well. 3) Barron did ok - I believe it is his spot to lose, and he deserves another extended NHL run before we give up on him. I project the D to be Matheson-Guhle, Hutson (how do you keep him off the team?) - Savard, Xhekaj - Barron. Then a big decision on who to keep? Struble or Mailloux as would think 7 D. Reinbacher probably starts in Laval. 4) Despite Pezzetta's energy and heart, I will be disappointed if Pezz makes the team roster. 5) Primeau was lucky on a post stop, but I thought he played well on his angles and vision - Philly had ample chances on their PP, and Cayden kept the Habs in the game early on.

My guess at the starting roster . A young player , other than Hutson , would have to have an amazing camp to make the team and a veteran would have to have a terrible camp .
These choices are made based on current contract situation - nothing scientific - unless we move a player in the bottom six , there isn’t a spot for a young guy . Of course the team could get creative and find one
unlwss someone gets moved where is Beck ( as example ) going to play 🤷♂️
Unless there are more trades
Slafkovsky , Suzuki, Caufield Laine , Dach , Newhook Gallagher , Dvorak, Armia Anderson, Evans , Roy ( Roy starts somewhere )
RHP is injured ( I think )
Pezzetta rotates
On D , until Savard is moved choose your pairings
Matheson Savard Guhle Wifi Barron Mailloux Hutson
Struble starts in Laval . He doesn’t bring anything different or special than any of those guys I listed

^^ Thanks for sharing this, BT! I couldn't catch the game because it unfortunately wasn't (legally) available on this side of the pond, so I only got to see the extended highlighs on YT. - Dach and Laine could be quite something, I'm really looking forward to see what they can do together once the rust is off and they're actually in game shape. Agreed on Newhook, I like him as a player but I'm not sure he's the perfect linemate for those guys. It's just been 1 game, so there's no reason to change things up right away, but Armia is an interesting option you're bringing up. He's clearly not the guy you'd usually want on your 2nd line but with Dach and Laine? Hm... tempting, could definitely be worth a try at some point.
- Kapanen is a great 'problem' to have. His performance at the WC was pretty good and he had a really strong post-season in Liiga (tied for the league lead in points), so there's been a lot to like lately. I'm not sure he'll be a 2C in the NHL but as a middle/bottom six guy? There really isn't any room right now because of Evans, Dvorak, Beck but they won't all be here long-term. It's nice to finally have some real options at C after all those years.
- Lane Hutson keeps doing Lane Hutson things, MSL even explicitly mentioned his consistency. I don't think there's any scenario in which he doesn't start the regular season in the NHL... I'd be really surprised if he didn't. Not saying he'll be there all season but he's earned a shot in my opinion.
- Barron needs to keep it simple and play his game – it's cliche but for now he seems to be doing exactly that. Given his waiver status and the fact that Mailloux hasn't done much so far, it's his spot to lose right now.
I've been on the Armia/Laine hype train from the beginning, and will be until it happens

If your top two pairings are gonna be Matheson-Guhle and Hutson-Savard, I don't really want a rookie on the third pairing who gets lost defensively. We're going to get plenty of offensive contribution from Matheson and Hutson, so i just want a third pairing that can lock it down in their own end and be difficult and unpleasant to play against. To me that's Xhekaj and Struble. Right now Mailloux looks like he could use some more time in Laval. Of course that could change over the next few weeks.Does anybody else wanna see Armia-Kapanen-Laine? just for fun?

Agree with everyone (Only caught some of the game but agree with the overall comments).
- I think Slaf-Suzuki-CC likely starts as our #1 line (although i could see one of those wingers move to the Dach-Laine line during the season if MSL tries to shake things up. - As others have said: only one game - but Newhook looks ill suited to that line. Considering how good Armia-Newhook-Gallagher was to end the season, I think MSL goes back to that unless something changes in the preseason.
if i had to guess opening night roster, I think we will see:
Slaf - Suzuki - CC Roy - Dach - Laine Armia - Newhook - Gallagher Evans - Dvorak - Kapanen
Matheson - Guhle (if healthy, if not, i think Reinbacher will start here for a few games) Hutson - Savard Xhekaj - Barron Struble.
I think Hutson starts in the NHL. I think Mailloux starts in the AHL. I think Barron has the #3RHD spot unless he fumbles. I think Struble and Xhekaj will rotate a bit. Once Guhle is healthy Reinbacher likely goes back to the AHL but if he impresses enough... you never know.

Also interesting to remember that Armia's best moments here were with Perry and Staal in the playoff run. it was a trio of guys that weren't the fastest but that cycled the puck really well and were a pain to play against because of their size and puck protection. They wore other teams out. Could Armia do that with Dach and Laine, two guys with as much size, maybe a tad less will to muck it up than Perry, but more skill? I think that line would be a handful, and as I said, it kind of puts players who play a more similar game together and frees up Newhook to play with better skaters or guys who function more off the rush. Heineman-Newhook-Anderson could interesting, for example, even though I doubt Heineman makes the team out of camp.
Kapanen and Beck may be competing for one spot (or maybe no spots). I agree both are best-suited for 3C/4C jobs right now, but that could change over time. They're both smart players who work hard, so it won't be hard to move them around the line-up (ie you don't need to hide them the way you do with an Anderson or a Pezzetta or a Hoffman).

Up front, I've already said I think Newhook might eventually slip off that 2nd line, but not sure that will be the case to start the year. I think MSL wants it to work. I don't think there's any chance Anderson isn't in the starting 12 though. I think MSL will give first crack to the vets barring a trade or injury. I think it'll be tricky to trade Dvorak, Gallagher, or Anderson at this time of year, so I wonder if Jake Evans isn't the most likely to go (being on a more affordable contract) if Beck or Kapanen pushes hard enough for a roster spot.

Gah, i knew i forgot someone. You're right, almost no way Kapanen makes the team over Anderson. And i also agree that MSL probably wants to give that Newhook-Dach-Laine time - and hey, maybe it will work, im just not convinced they are complimentary players. Dach & Laine look like they were made to play with each other. Even anderson doing his north south game *might* work there. I think they will try a few guys although i honestly think Roy may be the best fit, he may not get a shot just yet.

Tonight's lineup. Those of us who thought Reinbacher may take Guhle's spot until he's healthy were correct. Its interesting that Armia & Gallagher are lining up on one line again (like they did with Newhook to end the season) since both are RWs. I still think there's a good chance we'll get Gallagher-Newhook-Armia again soonish, if not to start the season.
Mailloux plays back to back... i suspect he's one of those guys that management really want to see. He likely doesnt have a shot since he is waiver exempt and Barron isnt. Mind you, Struble, Guhle and Xhekaj and of course Hutson are all waiver exempt too. Man we have a young defense. Only Matheson, Savard and Barron have to clear waivers on our defense!
Caufield-Suzuki-Slaf Gallagher-Evans-Armia Farell-Beck-Mesar Pezz-F. Xhekaj-Simoneau
Matheson-Reinbacher Struble-Mailloux Trudeau-Hayes

I guess I am eating some words after Pezzetta's performance against New Jersey! Not the first time for eating crow... Wishful thinking on my part that they would take more of a chance on a Heineman, or Beck or ABB. I guess with Pezz, you know you are getting effort and grit based on his body of work and I was valuing speed / and skill set over that. I have to ask and remind myself whether it is best to have a young guy sit as the 13th forward or play and develop with more ice time in a Laval or Swedish league. Not an easy call. I suspect Pezz might get claimed on waivers but I do not really think that is a deal or game breaking mistake. Patience is tough for young players and fans while waiting for DVO, Evans, Armia or Savard to be moved on later in the season.

At a certain point though - if some of these prospects work out - we're going to need to trade some players. Some contracts will expire, some kids arent ready, some guys wont work out but no matter how you slice it we have too many players in the middle of the lineup. THe really nice thing for a change is that we're actually starting to get some quality at the top of the lineup. If Laine works out we may have 6 legitimate top 6 forwards in Slaf, Suzuki, CC, Laine, Dach and Demi. Matheson will likely move on soonish but we're still left with bonefide top 4 guys in Hutson, Guhle, Reinbacher and Mallioux. Guys like Struble, Engstrom, Heineman, Trudeau, Tuch, etc may not even get a chance despite being potentially decent NHL players. I was glad to see Mesar having a bit more impact last night.

We however have too many D regardless On LD - Matheson, Hutson, Guhle, Wifi On RD - Savard, Baron, Mailoux, Reinbacher If we're in the playoff mix by trade deadline, I don't see us moving either vet so one of Mailoux or Reinbacher likely is in the minors by then barring a meltdown by Hutson 👆 reinbacher can start in Laval, no need to rush him. Guhle is injured . Struble, Mailloux can also go to Laval . There’s no need to rush anyone . Savard is an UFA at end of this year so depending how the season goes he may get traded sooner or later . We can then re evaluate all of them . Remember last year we were fretting on where NorlindEr was going to fit in . He took care of himself Never thought much of Norlinder myself? Guhle is not injured really he had his appendix out and will be back shortly. I agree with Reinbacher going to Laval for sure he will be better for it! Struble is what he is a good solid Player but not a guy who makes much difference and Mailloux could still use some more time getting his game together as well. Hutson on the other hand looks special to me I think he is more than ready to start in the NHL he will have a lot to learn but he is ready to get started!

We hope everyone will work out & for sure many look like they might but remember it wasnt too long ago that we thought we were "stacked" at RHD with Weber, Petry, Brook, Fleury and Juulsen. Yes . But we do it every year . We think ( hope , believe etc ) that a lot of these D prospects are going to make it to the big team . How many are going to grow into top pairing ? . Looks like Hutson possibly. The rest middle bottom pairings nothing special , every team has them .

Guhle is back already! skated today should be fine for the opener....wish I still recovered like I did in my early 20'S! We do the hope and believe thing every year that is true but it is also true that we have had many high draft picks lately and most have panned out which is promising! also we have a development team in place that is as good if not better than many teams in the league. Having management that knows what they are doing is slowly turning this team around! I have been watching the team since the begining of the 70's and we are in a better place than we have been in a long long time! we have real depth players who can come in and get the job done not just fillers and once we get Demidov up to speed he will add another layer to what is already a far better set of forwards than we have had since the 90's as far as the d corps goes we have enough depth that we were able to convert one into Laine! whatever happens with him that is really really good!

The Habs were outmatched tonight, albeit given the Leafs iced a lot more NHL-caliber players, they also can't be too happy that they couldn't bury the Habs in this one. Dobes was by far our best player and made up for a lot of errors by that young D corps. Reinbacher was probably our worst defenceman. Engstrom wasn't far behind, and Xhekaj looked sloppy at times. Once again, Lane Hutson was our best defenceman and it stood out even more tonight given how poorly the other young D men played.
Up front, there also wasn't much to write home about. None of the young guys really seized an opportunity to force the Habs' hands tonight. Kapanen had a few good moments but wasn't as dominant as his previous outing. Heineman, Beck, and Roy had trouble putting their stamp on the game. Barre-Boulet had a few good shifts but also made a handful of mistakes. The vets didn't really do any better but ultimately, when these young guys don't stand out for the best, the default is to go back to the vets come regular season time. I think the only guy who inched closer to cracking the NHL line-up tonight was Hutson. Maybe Barron and Struble remain status quo by virtue of the fact they had jobs to lose, but otherwise, nothing to get that excited about after tonight's game.
