🤣 Monahan 30 yr old was an UFA I can only guess that the Habs didn’t want to offer him what CBJ did which was 5 years @ $5.5 m / year They probably thought that Dach returning , would fill the 2nd line C void , little did they know that Dach would struggle upon his return .
Sounds like they were interested in Jonathon marchessault 33 yr old ( sooon to be 34 ) but he went to CBJ for 5 years @ $27.5 m
Seems like management tried but …..🤷♂️ 5 years is a long time to invest in a guy who could be a slug in yr 4 and 5

I have no issue with draft picks but I also find it useless to trade away really good players when you have a core that needs some of them to continue to develop. At the end of the day it is a balancing act we need to keep some good vets, Monahan was one he was also a center kind of needed on this team as we are very soft up the middle. I personally think our forwards would be better served by having him here helping them round into the best players they can be rather than having Evans play way over his ceiling! Now part of the problem here is Hugo did not identify the issue or do anything about it heading into this season I think we should have picked up an older guy who could play 2nd or 3rd line minutes with a year or two left to help with faceoffs and bring the kids along. We do have some real dead weight leftover from the past Dvo is pretty much useless to us and Armia is still a slug most nights but at least we are close to seeing them gone. Monahan had zero interest in resigning in MTL and was on a one year "show me deal" ... the trade garnered us prospects/picks that we would not have gotten had we not traded him. The evidence for this is when his contract expired, he signed with CBJ. There is nobody else worth mentioning that was traded by the current management in terms of "good player". Thats neither what Monahan himself has said, nor what was reported. They started negotiations in January & Hughes purportedly only wanted to offer a 1 or 2 year deal & Monahan said he would sign with us for 3 years. Once they realized term was going to be a hurdle then they agreed it was best to move him & he was traded in February. Im not saying Hughes should have stuck to his guns at 2 years but its not like Monahan is ancient. He's younger than Josh Anderson and only a year and a half older than evans. I can totally understand the concerns about health though. that would have been a risk & still could be.

At this point, they got assets back ...

Assets meh. We are doing a great job of learning how to lose we have assets and we will continue to get more assets as the years go on and there is more than one way to build a team. The idea is not just about Monahan it is about building a well balanced team with a good mix of players young and older players with experience to guide them in the first year or two in the league as an example Monahan was that type of player so was Perry they were winners and played a solid game instead we hang onto Armia because once or twice a year on a full moon he does something right! or Dvo who makes a bad pass in our zone leading to a goal and puts us in a tight spot.
