If Toronto had bothered to play any of their regular NHLers tonight, I think they would've smashed us. Tonight's game (I know, I know... pre-season) didn't inspire much confidence in the players on the ice. Josh Anderson still looks like an over-paid fourth liner. In fairness, i think everyone stopped playing after the laine injury. I suspect the regulars were like "i do not want to get injured in the preseason" and eased up.

Man, what a tough break for Laine after everything he went through already. We just can't have nice things in Montreal, all the fun and anticipation gone in a blink before the season even started.
Time for someone else to step up and grab that spot on the 2nd line, otherwise it's going to be a looooong season. Again.

I suspect some of the guys still here (Engstrom, Condotta, Dobes, etc.) are just warm bodies to fill out the line-up next game. Reinbacher is hurt. But there really aren't that many legitimate decisions left to make. Does Mailloux make it to start the season if Guhle isn't ready? Does he make it as an 8th D man? Does Heineman or Kapanen win a job now that Laine is down? Do we carry ABB as a 14th forward instead of the 8th D man?
I think those are pretty mcuh the questions to ask.

I've watched the first four episodes of this. It's mildly interesting to see some behind the scenes footage, but definitely feels like "state media" / propaganda, not a real documentary. I'll watch the rest, but would only recommend it for dedicated Habs fans - it's not a good documentary in any objective sense.
For example, they don't even mention Marc Bergevin's name and by episode 4 we're well into the season without any talk of Slafkovsky's struggles.

With the preseason winding down and most of the cuts done, I think MSL / Hughes are going to have to make some decisions soon. Laine & RHP are gone for a few months which leaves:
Locks: (10) Dach, Suzuki, Slafkovsky, Newhook, Caufield, Dvorak, Anderson, Gallagher, Armia & Evans
Probably Locks:(2) Roy and Pezzetta (roy is the better player but Pezz has to clear waivers)
At least one of these guys will stay with the big club (considering Matheson, Savard and Barron are the only dmen who have to clear waivers I think there's a possibility 2 forwards stay with the big club):
On the Bubble: (3) BarrΓ©-Boulet Heineman Kapanen
All 3 had about the best camps they could hope for. Kapanen's was best but Heineman showed he has an NHL future abd ABB was surprisingly good. ABB is the only one who would have to clear waivers & he seems like he'd be a useful player. Im not convinced they expose him to waivers.
Thoughts?

Iβve said before I donβt think heineman has a future here . No particular reason, and if he does he becomes a bottom six plug . Heβs the next Jess Ylonen
I Donβt think they want to lose Pezzetta or BB for nothing ( they just signed him this summer ) so they will stay on for now
I guess π€·ββοΈ but we shall see

Im not convinced they expose him to waivers. Thoughts? That's a pretty fair evaluation. There will be some cap adjustments for the accrual purposes where Roy and likely another d-man is temporarily sent to Laval. I believe they will go with a 23 man roster of 14 forwards, 7 D, 2 G. Both ABB and Kapanen can play Centre in a pinch, so one of them makes it. I don't think Heineman has quite shown enough to make the jump and may need some more AHL games given his previous injury history there last year. So it comes down to ABB vs Kapanen's development and ice time. I believe the Habs like the idea of keeping control of Kapanen's development vs. sending him back to Sweden and risking the Norlinder situation where he didn't play much as he was not considered part of the Swedish team's long term plans. So I'll go with keeping Kapanen and perhaps waiving ABB to be captain of the Rocket. On D, I believe Struble has done enough to warrant being the 7th d-man, and Mailloux despite having a great year in Laval, will be down there for a short term. Keeping 8 D-men does not make much sense to me.

My guess as to the line-up with Laine out:
Caufield-Suzuki-Slafkovsky Newhook-Dach-Roy Heineman-Dvorak-Anderson Armia-Evans-Gallagher Pezzetta, ABB
Matheson-Guhle Hutson-Savard Xhekaj-Struble Barron
Montembeault Primeau

So Engstrom is lost! Mailoux is not ready Trudeau is not ready Heinemen looks lost as well and Monty is soft tonight! On a positive note Gally actually looks fast again what's up with that? Kapenen looks great out there! and Guhle looks great considering he missed the whole camp! Once this stupid preseason is over we can move on to the real deal!

He was sucking air in his first game as i recall,,,, much better pace from him tonight. Dvo and Evans look ready to go too. Josh is invisible and both Monty and Primeau not looking their best starting the season. Dobes looked the strongest of the 3 pre season. ABB might make the team over Kapanen if the only spot available for him is 4th line. Can't see him cracking top 6 even with Laine out

My guess as to the line-up with Laine out: Caufield-Suzuki-Slafkovsky Newhook-Dach-Roy Heineman-Dvorak-Anderson Armia-Evans-Gallagher Pezzetta, ABB Matheson-Guhle Hutson-Savard Xhekaj-Struble Barron Montembeault Primeau I'm not sure that Struble is strong enough to play the right side on the 3rd pairing. I believe Barron starts on the right side. With Struble and Xhekaj possibly rotating for various stretches. I am intrigued on their judgement of Heineman vs Controlling Kapanen's development. ABB seemed to play well enough to earn a starting spot.

Struble has outplayed Barron both last season and this camp. Barron looks better than last year, but I still hesitate as to whether he's an NHLer. He's not needed on the PP, really, with Matheson and Hutson ahead of him and Xhekaj and Guhle both capable of playing there too, and within the organization, I think Mailloux has a higher ceiling as an offensive RHD. I don't think there's space for both Barron and Mailloux on the same roster down the line unless at least one of them improves their D zone play. All that to say that Barron has the advantage of being a righty, and that will buy him games, but I think the coach has more confidence in Xhekaj and Struble. Ultimately, I think all three guys will rotate in and out, and I wouldn't be surprised if Hutson sits some games as well, just because of how tough the schedule might be for him.
Up front, ABB has played well for a 4th liner but he doesn't really have top 6-9 potential, and he has struggled to finish his chances. We may end up with a player who gets in the right positions but can't score, like a Jan Bulis or more recently Josh Anderson, and we all know fans and media grow tired of this quickly. I think ABB might make the team as the 14th forward, but I think he's behind Pezzetta on the depth chart, and I don't see ABB filling in for Laine's absence. Not my decision, but I think Roy likely moves up a line and then the question becomes Heineman vs. Kapanen for the last top 9 spot. Kapanen has had the better camp, but if the team is willing to send Beck down and Mailloux down and gave Xhekaj and Barron and Primeau time in the AHL last year, I wonder if they're just going to be patient with Kapanen. Maybe he gets a 10-20 game audition while Laine is out and then they decide. But I also wonder if they're not more rushed in wanting to see what Heineman can do at the NHL level, and maybe that tips things in his favor...

I don't think much of Heineman? he has never really impressed me much I personally would keep Kapanen he reminds me of Lehky with his work ethic speed and being solid with the puck.
