Calgary Flames goaltender Jacob Markstrom left the team's practice on Monday with an apparent right-hand injury. TSN's Salim Valji reports Markstrom was struck by a shot in the non-protected part of the hand and was rushed off the ice. General manager Craig Conroy and goalie coach Jason LaBarbera went to the locker room to see him immediately after. The Calgary Flames are breathing a sigh of relief after it was announced starting goalie Jacob Markstrom is week to week with a fractured finger that doesn’t require surgery.

Jacques Martin hired by Ottawa senators As Senior Adviser to the coaching staff
So he’s not an Assistant coach , he’s an adviser, not just any adviser, a Senior adviser 🤷♂️

Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman John Klingberg will have hip surgery at the end of December and will miss the remainder of the 2023-24 season, general manager Brad Treliving told the media on Wednesday. This one will be interesting to watch - fair bit of competition for d-men. Wonder who will overpay.

This one will be interesting to watch - fair bit of competition for d-men. Wonder who will overpay. We have a few. And the teams who will be desperate will probably not think twice about giving up draft picks or prospects...
There are two groups of teams that could be after our defencemen:
1. Cup contenders, who might be more interested in Matheson or Savard (or maybe Guhle, Kovacevic, or Xhekaj)
2. Teams that are building for the future +/- for now, who could be interested in any of Guhle, Harris, Xhekaj, Barron, Struble, etc.
In our case, we aren't really pressed to move a righty unless there's a good offer, so we're likely more focused on moving one of Matheson, Xhekaj, or Harris, probably in that order. So who are the buyers this year that might be willing to overpay for a veteran? LA, Toronto, Boston, Pittsburgh, Vegas, Dallas, Carolina, New Jersey, NY Rangers, Vancouver, Tampa, Florida, Detroit, Colorado, Winnipeg, etc. Still a lot of teams in the mix and some may be compelled to spend even if they're not at the top right now, just because of their aging cores (like Pit or Tampa).
Now who could use a LHD like Matheson? LA. Vancouver. Maybe the Rangers or Devils, despite their overall defence depth. Maybe Toronto. Other teams might want to add despite not being fully in it right now (Edm, Buf, etc.) or to add to already good depth just to get over the top. But those first few teams might be the most suitable teams to pursue Matheson. From those teams, who could we look at as being a focus for the return?
- LA: RW Koehn Zimmer (a guy I thought we might look at last draft), Jordan Spence (whom I talked about a lot last year and the year before that as a trade target when we were potentially moving Edmundson), Alex Turcotte (who has dealt with lots of injuries but has some previous history with Caufield), maybe Arthur Kaliyev if the Kings decide they can part with him, and then obviously a 1st rounder of some sort would round out some of the key elements in play. Could Matheson and a 3rd for Spence, Turcotte, and a 1st rounder or Matheson and a 5th for Spence, Zimmer, and a 1st be a deal?
- Van: Lekkerimaki would almost certainly be prime target number one given the Habs previous interest in him. Tom Willander would be of interest too but likely isn't available. Hunter Brzustewicz is off to a great start in the OHL this year, but it didn't seem like the Habs had much interest in him in the draft last year. And Arturs Silovs is a big goaltender of interest. Would the Nucks part with Lekkerimaki plus a 1st to add Matheson?
- NYR: Gabe Perreault is their top prospect from the recent draft. Adam Sykora is a guy I liked from the draft before that, but he projects more as a middle of the lineup guy. Brennan Othmann would have to be a player of interest for us, you would think, as a guy who can score but plays a heavy game at the same time. Bryce McConnell-Barker is another interesting center prospect. And then there's of course Kaapo Kakko, who was drafted by Gorton. Again, would NY bite at Othmann + a 1st for Matheson?
- NJ: Nemec was the prize there, but it's likely too late for that. Seamus Casey could still be within reach. Alex Holtz is an option. Is one of Akira Schmid or Nico Daws available? But could Matheson for Holtz and a 1st be an option here?

Very interesting propositions re; Matheson. I do look at LA, NYR, and NJ as teams likely to push with some all in chips. Matheson has 2 years at $4.875M with an 8 team NTC. Doubt that he has any of those teams on his list. LA could use a puck moving LHD like Matheson. LA seems to have enough offense with Byfield and Kaliyev. With some cap space movement, the Kings could do it. Would like to see how Ziemmer does at the world juniors, but Jordan Spence does not move the needle enough for me NYR rangers are a question mark - Miller Lindgren on the left side with a renaissiance of Erik Gustaffson - just not sure they have the strong need at LHD. With Kakko hurt, Chytil in concussion, their need may be more offense. NJ Devils - underachieving so far. Luke Hughes and Siegenthaler IMO are not enough on that left side especially with RHD Hamilton out indefinitely - surgery on pectoral muscle. Always liked Holz but even Dawson Mercer as part of a package. Vancouver? - Seems to me to be too early in their ascension to pull off a Matheson trade. Needing to find a team which views themselves as contenders that need a puck moving offensive LHD like Matheson to add to their lineup. I don't see much - Colorado has no interesting prospect chips. The Blues are a possibility - would l ever like Dvorsky coming back, and even take Scandella off their hands.

It took all of three NHL games for Simon Nemec to score his first goal. And it was a game-winner, no less. Nemec scored midway through the second period, Akira Schmid made 16 of his 37 saves in the third and the New Jersey Devils beat the skidding Seattle Kraken 2-1 on Thursday night for their fifth victory in six games.

The thing is, he may never be a top 6 player so as a 4th overall pick he's a bust but he's a legitimate nhler. Over 82 games he's going to get you 12-15g and 30+ points. Thats nothing to sneeze at. The question is whether his contract expectations are in line with those numbers.

You're right, his underlying numbers are solid but the expectations were huge. Kinda like a Doug Wickenheiser type draft pick/player. Temper your expectations and with a matching salary could give you a Armia type player with a bit more production. He'll forever have to earn his playing time and be happy with whatever salary he gets.

Heating up in the Sens-Wings game. Matt Joseph crosschecks Larkin in the head and knocks him out. Melee ensues and David Perron cross-checks Zub in the head and gets tossed. Only two minutes to Joseph though. Both guys IMO worthy of suspension.
