The Carolina Hurricanes have added another option to their blue line for next month's training camp, signing defenseman Nathan Beaulieu to a professional tryout (PTO) Monday.
Beaulieu, 30, was a first-round selection of the Montreal Canadiens in 2011 and has played in 471 games in the league since.

The average annual value of the deal is $6.5 million and it will begin with the 2024-25 season. They gave up two late first rounders plus 2 players (Raddysh, Katchouk - young 2nd rounders) to get him. Obviously the Bolts think highly of him, but in the short term , he hasn’t impressed me that much tbh in post season. 8 years $6.5m is a pretty good lockup for a mercurial player - I’m not sure I would project him to be a core player in the Caufield or Suzuki echelon. Then again we gave 1/2 of this trade (late first round early 2nd round) for Newhook - outcome tbd, but it sure looks to me like a Bolts overpay.

Peter Baugh of The Athletic is reporting that former Toronto Maple Leafs forward Peter Holland is attempting to make a comeback with the Colorado Avalanche. Baugh reports that Holland will be trying to return to the NHL after not playing hockey anywhere last season.
Holland last played professionally in the Swedish Hockey League for Djurgardens IF. He struggled offensively, posting just six assists as he cut his season short and played in just 15 games.

Oilers sign Evan Bouchard 2 yrs $7.8 m They are going to regret this in 2 years. $3.9m is probably a slight underpayment but its going to cost them dearly when this one is up. This is not the type of player you want to give a bridge deal to. They should have locked him up but probably couldnt afford to... they are going to be in a cap mess very soon (sort of already are)

I think they're just a few 100k under the cap and that's with a 21-man roster. So they can't afford to ice a full team and there really was no choice here other than bridging. They likely need to trade someone (Hyman, Kane, Ceci, Kulak, Campbell, etc.) to make some room, but that's if they can find a taker. It's a mess.

Auston Matthews new extension with Leafs: 4 years x $13.25 million. Total of $53 million.
This seems steep although i guess the 4 years is the safety here: if he had signed for 7 or 8 he likely would have gotten less AAV. This puts him about .75/million higher than McDavid and MacKinnon...

Lafrenierre signs 2 yr extension with NYR $4.65 m Presumably ends the "laff to montreal" rumours? I think hughes would have been interested in a RFA Laff (so he could try to offer a similar medium term deal like Newhook or Dach) but i dont think he's interested in Laff on a 2 year deal. If he does play well thats going to be a big raise in 2 years....

If he does play well thats going to be a big raise in 2 years.... I don't think Hughes was interested in RFAs this year. Why?
1. We're likely going to be a lottery team again next draft, so it would be very risky to give up your 1st rounder in an offersheet. 2. We have no 2nd rounder because of the Dvorak trade.
So I think any chance of acquiring a Lafreniere or a Bouchard would have been via a trade. I don't think the 2-year deal is a deterrent, I actually think it's a reasonable contract to trade for. If he does well, then good on you for adding a star player, regardless of whether he needs a raise. If he doesn't live up to expectations, you're free to walk without a commitment. It's similar to what the Canes did with Kotkaniemi or what the Habs did with Gurianov last year. Evaluate the player and make your decision.
