Just for fun ................some notable comparisons with the 44 in 50 (.88): McDavid 75 in 49 (1.53) Draisaitl 77 in 49 (1.57) Marner 47 in 50 (.94) Nylander 40 in 50 (.80) Tavares 44 in 55 (.80) Suzuki 23 in 32 (.72) Howe 160 in 157 (1.02) Beliveau 176 in 162 (1.09) Ovechkin 141 in 147 (.96) Orr 92 in 74 (1.24) #99 382 in 208 (1.84) #87 201 in 180 (1.12) #66 172 in 107 (1.61) Those 1+ pt/gm guys are/were special. Regardless of the era the cream rises to the top.

FWIW, Elliotte Friedman says the Rangers view the Lafreniere contract as a way to try him out under new leadership and see if he can flourish but still have a short enough commitment that they can trade him after this season if it's not working out under yet another coach. So it sounds like there could still well be an opportunity for HuGo to pull that player out of New York. We'd be an obvious trade target if he's available given the Gorton connection and the Quebecer angle. I think it would just depend on the price and the Rangers' cap position. One thing that an extra year gives us is the chance to develop our younger guys a bit more: if Lafreniere's development stalls (and his value thus drops a bit more) and one of our young D men like a Harris, Xhekaj, or Barron takes the next step, then suddenly maybe swapping a young affordable defenceman (where we have organizational depth) becomes more intriguing for New York (who don't have cap space to take on an Anderson or a Dvorak or so on).

Regardless of the era the cream rises to the top. It's not that Matthews has done nothing in the playoffs, but I think the knocks on him are the following:
1. His team has not had success 2. There have been a number of examples where he's appeared unengaged in the game (i.e. unwilling to do the dirty work to win) 3. While his 0.88 PPG is not terrible, you look at his ice time compared to a Nylander, for example, and Matthews averages over 21.5 minutes a game in his post-season career, whereas Nylander averages a bit under 18 minutes. So the "per game" production here doesn't tell the whole story of Matthews also getting lots of opportunity and ice time. Nylander's production per ice time has actually been better than Matthews' if we aggregate the past 3 seasons, for example.
4. Matthews has been a prolific scorer in the regular season, but his production in the playoffs has tailed off substantially compared to how he's scored in the regular season.
All that put together and it just gives the appearance that he isn't a leader on the ice when the going gets tough. Now he's still young enough that he could change that narrative, and I personally think the Leafs signed him to a reasonable contract that buys them his prime years. They're better off keeping him than having lost him in a year. But ultimately, Matthews is going to continue to get bashed until he can prove himself in the post-season as being more clutch. As it stands, I think Nylander and Marner have actually shown up more when it counts.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed goaltender Aaron Dell and defenseman Nicolas Meloche to professional tryout deals for 2023-24.
Dell, 34, has 130 games of NHL experience over eight seasons. With a 50-50-13 record and five shutouts, Dell has been a backup throughout his career, setting a career-high of 33 games played with San Jose in 2019-20.

Auston Matthews new extension with Leafs: 4 years x $13.25 million. Total of $53 million. This seems steep although i guess the 4 years is the safety here: if he had signed for 7 or 8 he likely would have gotten less AAV. This puts him about .75/million higher than McDavid and MacKinnon... This seems so crazy when you realize McDavid had almost double the points that Matthews put up last year.

This seems steep although i guess the 4 years is the safety here: if he had signed for 7 or 8 he likely would have gotten less AAV. This puts him about .75/million higher than McDavid and MacKinnon... I actually think this is a pretty fair deal for both sides. Matthews is generally considered a top-5 player in the league and outplayed his last contract and the cap is rising, so he was obviously getting a raise, but it doesn't rise to some of the more extreme numbers you were hearing. The four years means he locks in a good amount of cash but will also allow him to negotiate a new deal while likely still in his prime (good mix of certainty & upside for Matthews), while for the Leafs it gives them flexibility if he has injury issues or the things really go south or whatever.
I also don't think the AAV would have been less over a longer-term deal: Matthews should still be in his prime for those 4 years and cap is expected to start rising pretty dramatically, arguably it could have cost more.
And the playoff results are not great, but it's hard to imagine a world where they improve their cup odds by losing their best player.
